Where there are significant immediate concerns about the safety of a child, you should contact the police on 999
Everyone has a responsibility to refer a child when it is believed or suspected that a child:
- Has suffered significant harm and /or;
- Is likely to suffer significant harm and/or;
- Has developmental and welfare needs which are likely only to be met through the provision of family support services (with the agreement of the child’s parent).
If your query is not urgent, please use the email address social.care@northyorks.gov.uk to liaise with the Customer Service Centre, and you will receive a response within 24 hours.
If you believe the situation is urgent but does not require the police, please call 0300 131 2 131 to make a telephone contact. When prompted, say “children’s social care”. One of the advisors will be happy to support you.
Prevent Duty
At Welburn Hall School we fulfil our responsibilities under the Prevent Duty, which aims to protect children and young people from being drawn into extremism, radicalisation, or terrorism. If you have any concerns about a child’s welfare or would like further information about the Prevent Duty, please contact the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Operation Encompass
Operation Encompass is a police and education early information safeguarding partnership enabling educational settings to offer immediate support to children experiencing domestic abuse.
Operation Encompass ensures that there is a simple telephone call or electronic notification to a school’s trained Designated Safeguarding Lead prior to the start of the next school day after an incident of police attended domestic abuse where there are children related to either of the adult parties involved.
Information is shared with a school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead prior to the start of the next school day after officers have attended a domestic abuse incident. This sharing of information enables appropriate support to be given, dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child.
